- Water test-Fill the glass with water and add some honey in it. The fake honey will dissolve in water quickly while the real honey will settle at the bottom of the glass.
What kinds of honey wine can I make at home?
There is a wide range of honey wines you can make, you will never run out of choices! There are mainly three types of honey wine you can play with: pure honey wine, fruit honey wine and spices and herbs honey wine.
Pure honey wine
As the name shows, the pure honey wine is made with honey, yeast and water. The taste of pure honey wine still varies if you use different honey. Honey is collected by honeybee from flowers. Therefore the species of flowers will determine the taste of the honey. Like eucalyptus honey and buckwheat honey. You can try different honey with the flavors you like. Fruit honey wine
Besides using pure honey, you can also add fruit to give the honey wine some extra flavor. Some fruit honey wine is so popular that they even have their own name. For example, the honey wine with berries is called melomel. The apple juice and honey combine to make a fermented beverage called Cyser.
Spices and herbs honey wine
Honey wine brewed with herbs and spices added is called a metheglin. Adding spices and herbs is always a good idea. The spiced honey wine is the best drink for winter time. Basic spices like cinnamon and clove are good choices to start with. Once you are familiar with the flavors, you can mix them together, create your own favorite spice combination.
When making extra flavored honey wine, the lighter honey, like orange blossom or clover, will easily be overwhelmed by the berries and spices.
