Dear Alchema family,
Time for the August update! Let’s see what have happened last month.
It’s been awhile since we started tooling process. And finally, we got some photos to share with you this month! We couldn’t be more excited. As you can see from the photos below, the mold shows the shapes of the Alchema device. The tooling process started with cutting bulk metals into the shape we need. And it took a long time to do the cutting.

The technique used for cutting metal is called “Wire Electrical Discharge Machining”. The charged brass wire is used to cut the bulk metal into the shape we need. After all the machining processes are finished, the mold will be assembled since a functional mold is made up of many small pieces. Then the mold will be used to make several test production. It is to see if the mold can produce the device with correct appearance and function. After each test production, the mold will be fine tuned and adjusted based on the issues we find at each trial productions. It will take 2 to 3 times to tune the mold to the best condition for mass production.

Second focus group test
Yes! We had our second focus group held in both San Francisco and Taipei last month. Big applauses to those who took part in the focus group!
In this round of test, we have finished the whole “apply a recipe” functions, so the testers were able to experience from unboxing the device all the way to finish adding the ingredients of the recipe from the app. During the whole process, they were all on their own only with help from the app and the manual, without us giving any instructions. We are very thankful to those of you who participated the test and let us observe and document the problems. The tests went pretty smoothly while the most difficult and time-consuming part was cutting all the apples. (Surprise!)

where all the heavy work took place: cutting apples
We’ve learned two main points from this round of the test: First, we are thrilled to see the testers being so excited to experience the device as soon as they receive it. We’ve decided to add a short “user guide” in the app when it’s first been downloaded, so you’ll be able to interact with the device through the guide to learn about its functions, such as touching the top to wake it up, connecting to Bluetooth/WiFi, and weighing with the scale. Also, you can take this chance to check if every function works properly.
Second, people have different perspectives about “getting ingredients prepared”. For example, when making the apple cider, the testers were not sure if apples needed to be de-cored. We learned that we need to be more specific about the recipe wordings, giving more clear instructions and descriptions.
Thank you all so much for helping us unveil our blind sides so we are able to improve the product. We feel like we are a strong team and we are making a great product together!
Let’s it for our August update. Hope you have a great summer time!
